Volunteers are the key to our success

One of the roles that our Federation plays is fostering a strong sense of belonging. The upcoming United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Campaign Launch on Thursday, September 11 will have attendees understand their role in our complex Jewish world. Eitan Chitayat, known for I’m That Jew, will teach us how to build unity in our community and beyond. He has just finished a whirlwind 23-event tour of Australia, where he supported the Jewish communities there that have been subjected to extreme antisemitism recently. Next, he’s heading from down under to Edmonton, where we are his next stop! Buy your tickets today for this unforgettable evening.

Volunteers play a huge role

Volunteers are the heartbeat of not-for-profit organizations like the Jewish Federation of Edmonton. Their dedication enables us to fulfill our mission and bring meaningful programs to life. There are countless ways to get involved, and each act of service—big or small—is a powerful mitzvah. Giving time is one of the most generous gifts we can offer; once given, it cannot be reclaimed, making it more precious.

As we reflect on the spirit of volunteerism, we are reminded of some beautiful quotes that capture its essence:

“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.” — Sherry Anderson

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” — Unknown

“The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.” — DeAnn Hollis

Recently, our community came together for two major events that would not have been possible without the incredible support of volunteers.

The JCC Casino, held on July 16 and 17, saw 36 volunteers contribute their time and energy. Their efforts are expected to generate approximately $75,000—an impressive outcome that highlights how time can be just as impactful as financial donations. In fact, one volunteer shift equates to nearly $2,000 in value. For those who may not be able to give financially—as well as for those who are—volunteering offers a meaningful alternative that directly supports our community.

At the Israel Pavilion during Heritage Festival, volunteers of all ages and backgrounds helped welcome over 10,000 attendees. Among them were recent arrivals from Israel who found connection and belonging through their participation. This event was a beautiful example of how volunteering not only strengthens our programs but also builds bridges within our community.

These are just two examples of how volunteers make a difference. There are many more opportunities to get involved—whether by joining our board, helping plan events, supporting UJA canvassing, or lending a hand at programs throughout the year. Canvassing impact is made by personal touches from the volunteers who reach out to our donors. They build relationships that inspire gifts, which in turn strengthens Jewish life for everyone.

We especially encourage younger members of our community to step forward. The next generation will carry the torch of Jewish life in Edmonton, and their involvement today helps ensure a vibrant tomorrow.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please reach out to the Federation office. We’d love to help you find a role that fits your interests and availability.

To all who have already given their time: todah rabah and yasher koach. Your generosity sustains us, and your commitment inspires us.

Wishing you a peaceful and joyful Shabbat,

Rebecca and Benaron
