I’m honoured to step in as a guest contributor in this weekly community connection. As executive director of Jewish Family Services Edmonton (JFSE), it’s my privilege to represent our agency and to build bridges and connections within our community and to reduce barriers to accessing critical support services.
As we embark on this fresh chapter of the new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our well-being and set intentions for the year to come. The onset of a fresh year often brings resolutions, but instead of focusing solely on external goals, why not prioritize something truly transformative: your mental health?
In our fast-paced world, we cannot overstate the importance of mental well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and interact with those around us. Prioritizing mental health is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for living a balanced and fulfilling life. I’ll say it again for those in the back: YOU MUST TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF IF YOU ARE GOING TO TEND TO OTHERS. So, how can we nurture our minds and spirits this year?
First, consider the power of tiny, intentional habits. Whether it’s a few minutes of daily mindfulness, journaling, or simply stepping outside to appreciate nature, these moments of connection can create ripples of positivity throughout your day. Small actions often lead to significant change.
Second, don’t underestimate the value of rest. In a culture that glorifies busyness (and I will be the first to confess that I’m guilty of this), making space for relaxation and downtime is a radical act of self-care. Rest rejuvenates the mind, fosters creativity, and helps us tackle challenges with a clearer perspective.
Third, embrace the practice of reaching out. Mental health thrives in community. Our community thrives when we make ourselves visible to one another. This is especially important in addressing the unique challenges faced by Jewish individuals and families. The rise in antisemitism has a profound impact on mental health, creating feelings of fear, isolation, and vulnerability. Now, more than ever, we must stand together and support each other.
Organizations like JFSE play a vital role in spearheading mental health and human services within our community. They provide essential resources, advocacy, and a safe space to address the challenges that come with navigating a world where discrimination and hate still exist. Whatever community means to you, share your thoughts with a trusted friend, family member, or professional. Remember, seeking support is not a sign of weakness, but a testament to your strength and self-awareness.
Finally, be gentle with yourself. Progress isn’t always linear, and that’s okay. Celebrate your victories—no matter how small—and extend grace to yourself during setbacks. Growth takes time, and every step you take matters.
This year, let’s commit to prioritizing our mental well-being. When we care for our minds, we empower ourselves to show up fully in our lives and for those we cherish. Together, we can create a culture that values and supports mental health as a cornerstone of overall wellness.
Wishing you peace, resilience, and joy in this new year.
Shabbat shalom,
Danielle
