Pandemic support is available

While we prepare for Passover, we are reminded of the declaration during our seders “Let all who are hungry, come and eat…”. This is a reminder that even while there may be a feast in front of us, our neighbors may be hungry. To this end, Jewish Federation of Edmonton is addressing food insecurity both within our community and for our neighbors in Edmonton.

First, you may recall in a previous message that I mentioned the establishment of a COVID-19 Relief Program, which will be further enhanced with the proceeds from the Edmonton Jewish Film Festival. We have made grocery gift cards available, as well as other assistance, in order to address acute and immediate needs of the newly vulnerable in our community. The relief program is intended for those experiencing financial hardship as a direct impact of COVID-19.

Second, we as a community have the opportunity to fulfill a mitzvah as we come together for a food drive in support of Edmonton's Food Bank. On April 11, as part of the International Good Deeds Day initiative, we will have an Edmonton Food Bank truck at the Federation office. Volunteers will be on-site for a drivethrough drop-off so we can ensure public health orders are being followed. I encourage you to go for a Sunday drive with your non-perishables and help us fill the truck!  If you want to volunteer or have further questions, please contact melany.a@telus.net.

Our youth are continuing their direct connection to peers in Israel with a Partnership2Gether virtual visit this Sunday. In addition to talking about Passover I am sure they will have a lot to catch up on as their new friends are beginning to see things reopen in Israel.

Our virtual offices have been a hive of activity while we prepare for our many upcoming events – all listed in the e-weekly. We have another cooking experience lined up for Tuesday, March 16 with Michael Solmonov in preparation for Passover. Registration is also open for PJ Library and PJ Our Way (9–12-years-old) programming during Passover and March Break.

Shabbat Shalom,

Stacey
