As we welcome the peace and reflection of Shabbat, I find myself filled with gratitude and emotion as my time at the Federation ends. Next week marks my last week in this role, and I want to reflect on what an incredible journey it has been to serve this vibrant and inspiring Jewish community.
Serving in the portfolio of next generation leadership and advocacy has been a true privilege. The progress we’ve made together—every milestone, every connection, every moment of impact—would not have been possible without your unwavering support, your dedication, and your belief in our shared vision. Behind every success were countless hours of volunteer time, thoughtful planning, and heartfelt commitment. To all my incredible committees: thank you. Your passion and partnership have been the backbone of everything we’ve accomplished.
When I stepped into this role over two years ago, we were starting from scratch in young adult programming. There was no committee, a limited network, and no roadmap. Today, we have a thriving community of over 100 young adults, an active WhatsApp group, and a full calendar of events that bring us together in meaningful ways throughout the year planned by a dedicated committee. Hillel now has a director, a board succession plan, a welcoming space near campus, and strong, ongoing relationships with university administration and allied students. The transformation has been nothing short of remarkable.
In advocacy, our strides have been equally powerful. We have cultivated deep and lasting relationships with over 200 elected officials and staff, ensuring that the needs and concerns of our Jewish community are not only heard, but understood and prioritized. Our circle of allies has grown from a few to include the Hindu, Catholic, Christian, Mennonite, Indigenous, Rwandan, Persian, South Asian, Druze, Italian, and Dutch communities. Together, we’ve strengthened interfaith partnerships, addressed antisemitism head-on, and ensured Jewish representation in civic and governmental spaces. We have one of the most systematic and thorough reporting systems on antisemitism in the country, and we have used all our data tracking to advance our challenges with antisemitism post-October 7.
Our advocacy efforts have shown what’s achievable when we lead with strategy, data, and heart. We’ve advanced community safety, influenced public policy, and helped shape a more inclusive and understanding of Edmonton and Alberta.
As I prepare to pass the torch, I do so with immense pride in what we’ve built together—and with deep confidence in the future we’ve shaped. The foundations we’ve laid are strong, and I know they will continue to grow under the care of our committed volunteers and staff.
Thank you for your trust, your partnership, and your steadfast dedication to our community. It has been an honour to walk this path with you.
Shabbat Shalom—and with all my gratitude,
Jacqueline
