Tomorrow is National Philanthropy Day, and we are reflecting on the incredible generosity that sustains and strengthens our Edmonton Jewish community. As One, so many of you have answered the call of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Campaign, ensuring that through collective giving, we can meet the diverse needs of our community. When you make a gift to UJA, you are saying Hineni—here I am. You affirm that you are counted, that you stand with our community, and that you are part of something larger than yourself.
Your philanthropy does more than fund programs and beneficiaries—it empowers us to speak and act on behalf of our community. Whether at the Senate, with Edmonton Police, with elected officials, allies, and clergy, we bring forward issues of concern and build relationships that matter. This sacred work is possible because of you—our UJA donors—who make sure we have the strength and credibility to lead.
In October 2023, we opened an Israel emergency fund, along with Federations across Canada (and North America). In Canada, we raised over $120 million. Edmonton took part in this, and the emergency dollars were allocated to trusted agencies delivering on crisis response. Monies were put aside for ‘the day after’, and on my recent trip to Israel with fellow CEOs, we spoke with those on the ground about what matters most to rebuilding our partner region. With a focus on education (the number one concern after security), our combined philanthropy from ALL Jewish Federations’ emergency dollars will make transformational investments into this region—around education, mental health, and ancillary student supports.
Philanthropy is not just about giving; it is about intention. It is about tackling the significant issues that matter and taking a strategic approach to ensure the vitality of Jewish life for generations to come. Hundreds of generous donors bless our community, but the thoughtfulness behind your giving truly sets us apart, along with the trust you place in Jewish Federation to see the big picture and steward the needs of the entire community.
On this National Philanthropy Day, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Thank you for answering the call, for saying Hineni, and for ensuring that together, as one, we can continue to build, protect, and nurture our Jewish future. If you have not yet connected with your volunteer canvasser, you can “make the call” and secure your gift.
Shabbat shalom,
Stacey
