Hillel Director

This position is an entry-level generalist position. The Hillel Director is a part-time position as Hillel Director to the University of Alberta and other Edmonton post-secondary campuses. There is a possibility of additional hours and responsibilities to support youth programming. This position supports the volunteer chairs of this program and the rest of the Jewish Federation team and reports directly to the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton.

Specific duties and responsibilities

  • In collaboration with Hillel student leadership, develop and implement a strategic plan for the engagement of students, including uninvolved and under-involved, at U of A and other Edmonton campuses where Jewish students are enrolled. 
  • In collaboration with Hillel student leadership, ensure succession plan and adherence to governance of Hillel as student club on campus. 
  • Build relationships with Jewish students by meeting them where they live, work and study, utilizing innovative methods to reach and interest them. 
  • Work cooperatively/collaboratively with Jewish student leaders to develop and implement relationship-building programming. 
  • Maintain records of programs and attendance for evaluation purposes, create budgets and be financially accountable for Hillel activities. 
  • Work with students and Federation staff to plan and implement ongoing cultural, social, and Israel programming through festival and holiday celebrations, lunch and learn and other special events. 
  • Represent Hillel at tabling events, specified orientation activities, and general engagement opportunities.  
  • Act as liaison to community members and agencies. 
  • Develop and strengthen strategic relationships with university administrators, faculty, and staff, and community stakeholders. 
  • Act as liaison for students with university administrators for instances such as religious accommodations and other areas of concern. 
  • Work to develop the leadership skill set of the Hillel board and members through training opportunities (e.g. Changemakers, CIJA training, Hillel Leadership Retreat). 
  • Develop Hillel McEwan and establish relationships with Jewish students and faculty on campus. 
  • Attend regular Campus Subcommittee meetings facilitated by the Federation and members of the Jewish academic community. 
  • Assist with opportunities for Jewish student engagement during Jewish Studies Week.  
  • Table on campus informatively about Hillel and Israel. 
  • Monitor the campus environment at all campuses where there are Jewish students and report antisemitism and/or risks to Jewish students, if and when they emerge. 
  • Monitor the Hillel student incident reporting form and report antisemitic incidents to the appropriate channels. 
  • Maintain accurate, well-documented, and systematic records of all known antisemitic incidents and crimes on campuses across Edmonton. 
  • Document follow-ups and actions taken for all known antisemitic incidents and crimes on campuses. 
  • Liaise with police, administration, and student union when necessary to ensure student welfare and safety. 
  • Maintain a contact list of Jewish students and Faculty at all campuses. 
  • Organize and facilitate the annual Student-Faculty mixer. 
  • Liaise and plan events with Jewish Medical Student Association and the Jewish Law Student Association at the University of Alberta. 
  • Maintain set open hours once a week for the Hillel House.
  • Liaise with Calgary Hillel and where applicable develop partnered programs and opportunities.
  • Travel and attend Hillel Training day West coast, when applicable.

Qualifications

  • College, university or other professional certification;
  • Minimum one year’s experience with, Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, social media platforms; 
  • Experience in the non-profit environment;  
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; 
  • Superior attention to detail; 
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, effective interpersonal skills, demonstrating a strong capacity to work independently and collaboratively, under minimal supervision; 
  • Prior event or project management experience an asset; 
  • Demonstrated skills in building relationships with community members; 
  • Availability to work evenings and some weekends and travel as required;
  • Knowledge of the Jewish community an asset.
