Looking Forward: The Future of Holocaust Education
January 29, 2026 | 3:30 p.m. (Mountain Time)
MacEwan Campus - registration required
Join local scholars and educators for an engaging talk marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Featuring historian Dr. Melanie Carina Schmoll—author of Hatred of Jews: A Failure of Holocaust Education—in conversation with Dr. Alexander Warren Marcus (University of Alberta) and opening remarks by Dr. Regan Lipes (MacEwan University), this program explores the most pressing challenges and emerging directions in Holocaust education today. Together, these leading academics will discuss gaps in current teaching, rising antisemitism, and new approaches shaping how students learn about the Holocaust in Alberta and beyond.
Jennifer Magalnick from the Jewish Federation of Edmonton will close the session with insights on current programs and resources available to educators who are looking to better introduce topics related to the Holocaust into their classrooms, as well as information for students looking to learn more.
This event is made possible with support from the Jewish Federation of Edmonton, and the Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta.
