Opera has enthralled audiences for more than 300 years. Over these years its nature and form evolved extensively, reaching a peak in the 1800s. At that time opera became more substantive and sophisticated with the intertwining of drama, music and voice. Plots increasingly acquired a more emotional and convincing nature. The link between the music, lyrics and storyline developed extensively as well. While all art attracts everyone in differing degrees, one could argue that opera has garnered the largest audiences around the world, and for good reason. Over the run of this class we will attempt to explain and explore why this is the case; delve into the nature of opera and its components; and acquaint our class with the greatest operatic works and composers; as well as look into the various elements that make up this fascinating art form.
