This six-week course will explore the development of the symphony from its infancy to maturity and beyond. After an introduction to the symphony and its essential characteristics, we will explore works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler to discover how these composers put their individual stamp on the symphonic form, and, in some case, altered the form in significant ways to meet their personal needs. Along the way, we will observe how the orchestra required to perform these works changed audio and video recordings will enhance our study.
